The name 'Thelema' was coined by Rabelais in 16th century, he was one of France's most colourful writers. In his book "Gargantua and Pantagruel" he writes about a monk who is given an Abbey where the inhabitants were married and lived in splendour. One law governed the Thelemites "Do what thou wilt".
Giles Webb has taken the name and the law and has consistantly made great wine. His Cabernet Sauvignon is acknowledged as one of the great wines of South Africa. We are very pleased to stock a range of his wonderful wines.
Giles' son Thomas who we recently met in the shop tells us that the Merlot Reserve was
"One of only 4 red wines in South Africa to get 5 stars in the 2006 John Platter wine guide, South Africa’s leading wine guide.
According to the guide, the 2003 Merlot Reserve is “a show-stopper, possibly Thelema’s best ever red. Elegant rather than ostentatious; marvellous concentration of blackcurrent, fennel, leaf flavours buffed by 20 mths in 100% new French oak. Ripe yet vibrantly fresh; lingeringly dry.”
