Champagne

Pol Roger Champagne was founded in 1849 in the old Champagne town of Epernay and is still family run and controlled. The first M.Pol-Roger came from nearby Ay and built his business over the course of 50 years. On his death in 1899 his two sons, Maurice and Georges took over the running of the company. A further three generations have been involved with the business.

The company owns 85 hectares of prime vineyards in the Valle d'Eperney and the Cote de Blancs. A further 115 hectares are under contract with traditional growers. The house has stocks of 6.5 million bottles which represent at least five years supply. These bottles lie in three levels of chalk cellars below the town, a total of 7 kilometres of tunnels

The greatest fan of the House was Sir Winston Churchill who was extremely friendly with the owners, especially Odette Pol Roger. In fact he owned a very succesful racehorse called "Pol Roger". When Sir Winston died Pol Roger champagne placed a black band around the labels on their bottles as a mark of respect.

Subsequently the company created a special cuvee of the best wines from a great vintage year and named it after him. We are very pleased to stock this wonderful and delicate champagne
