Vintage 2006
France
Bordeaux
As you may have read the 2006 vintage is not the blockbuster of the 2005. That vintage is unique. The 2006 vintage is though, one not to be ignored and under normal circumstances it would be hailed as an extremely good vintage.
Winter lasted longer than usual and the vines therefore had longer to rest after the strenuous efforts of the previous years. There was some rain in March and by June flowering was in full swing. This was followed by superb weather in June and July and the thoughts turned to another great vintage. The August weather though did not continue in that vein with some days of grey skies and humid conditions. The weather therefore in September became crucial; the first 10 days were very sunny although the rest of the month was wet with some days of heavy rain. This did cause some rot and it was essential to sort this out on the tables in the chai when the grapes had been picked.
Merlot is traditionally the first of the vines to be picked and many were picked before the September late rains. Consequently the wines from St Emilion and Pomerol represent the better areas to buy. The Cabernets in the left bank, especially in St Julien and Margaux, survived the September rains and were picked in early October when the grapes were at peak ripeness.
Overall the 2006 wines have well developed fruit, soft well-balanced sweet tannins and this is a vintage that will complement the 2005. As a generalisation it is expected that the 2006 will be ready to drink before the 2005’s.
The prices shown are net of duty, shipping and VAT which will be payable when the wine is shipped in the spring/summer of 2009.
